Administrative History ↴
Castlegrove House belonged to the Groves of Letterkenny. William Grove built Castle Grove House in 1730. He was the High Sheriff of Donegal. His son Thomas was also High Sheriff but died without leaving an heir. William's second son James married Rose Brook, daughter of Basil Brook. One of their children, Thomas, took the name of Brook/Brooke and married his cousin Mary Susanna Grove. William's sister, Dorothy Grove married John Wood, of 9th Light Dragoons, in 1802. They lived in Castle Grove House. Their son, James Grove Wood Grove, was born in 1803. He became a Justice of the Peace, High Sheriff, and a barrister-at-law. He married Frances Judith, daughter of Robert Montgomery of Convoy House. Therefore there is some overlap of the two families in the Archives collection. James and Frances Grove Wood Grove's daughter, Dorothea Alice, married Reverend Charles Boyton of Derry in 1871. James and Frances Grove Wood Grove's son, John Montgomery Charles, was born in 1847. He also became a J.P. and was Secretary to the Grand Jury. John was also Land Agent for the estate of Colonel Robert George Montgomery in 1890 - 1893. John married Lucy Georgina in 1886, daughter of Major General William Maunsell Gabbett, East India Company's Artillery. John and Lucy's children included Lucy Dorothea and their only son, James Robert Wood Grove. James was born in 1888, joined the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in 1908 and served in the First World War (despatches) and became a major in 1919; later joined Royal Tank Corps, 1924. He married Eileen Edmonstone (Beatrice) Kirk of County Antrim. -
