  • Administrative History ↴

Beathaisnéis was a research project undertaken by Diarmuid Breathnach and Máire Ní Mhurchú, documenting the biographies of people involved in the life of the Irish language from 1560 to the present day. The Beathaisnéis collection contains 393 reseach files relating to individuals who had a commitment and connection to the Irish language. The collection includes material such as birth certificates, research notes, articles written about the subjects, and correspondences between Diarmuid and Máire and relatives/friends of the subjects of the biographies. Each biography has a unique ID number and biographies are arranged alphabetically by surname. The contents of ainm.ie are based on the nine-volume Beathaisnéis series. Ainm.ie is managed by Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge (DCU), funded by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in collaboration with Cló Iar-Chonnachta. Diarmuid Breathnach and Máire Ní Mhurchú continued to write biographies on ainm.ie until 2012. A panel of joint editors was established in January 2013 to write new biographies and to inform Cló Iar-Chonnacht of biographies that need to be updated. New biographies are added to the site as they are made available.
