Andrew Reginald Nicholas Gerald Bonaparte-Wyse was born in Limerick in 1870. A teacher by profession, he later became a National School Inspector. In 1922, he transferred to the Northern Ireland Ministry of Education and became Permanent Secretary in 1927. He remained the only Roman Catholic in the Northern Ireland administration for many years. He was the grandson of Lucien Bonaparte. He died in Dublin in 1940 and was survived by his wife and three children. -

The first four volumes are numbered I, IV, VI and VII and cover the period January – August 1886, May – December 1887, July 1889 – June 1890 and June 1890 – July 1891. Another three volumes are numbered VIII, IX and X and cover September 1891 – April 1892, September 1892 – September 1893 and September 1893 – April 1895. The last three volumes are dated May – December 1929, December 1929 – November 1930 and November 1930 – October 1933. The diaries record daily events in his life in great detail and largely concern education, pastimes, family and home life, health issues, social activities and his work in the Northern Ireland Ministry of Education. Reference is also made to political matters such as Home Rule and various election results.
