Content & Structure

  • Scope & Content: Haberer, Adolphe Heaney, Seamus, 1939-2013 ↴

The Haberer Heaney Collection contains correspondence between Professor Adolphe Haberer of the University of Lyon and Seamus Heaney. The correspondence began in 1992 when they first met at a conference on Irish literature in Caen, France. Their letters and cards to each other, sent over the following decades, touch on scholarly, literary and social matters and shed light on Heaney’s busy schedule of public appearances and publishing workload. Also included in the collection are typescript drafts of Heaney’s lecture ‘Time and Again: Poetry and the Millennium’, which was published in ‘The European English Messenger’ (Autumn 2001), an annotated typescript draft of Heaney’s essay ‘Joy or Night: Last Things in the Poetry of W.B. Yeats and Philip Larkin’, photographs of Heaney taken during and following public events in Poland and France, signed editions of Heaney’s verse which he presented to Haberer and Haberer’s personal recollections of his friendship with Heaney.
