Context

Creator(s): Incorporated Society for Promoting Protestant Schools in Ireland

  • Administrative History ↴

The Society was founded by Charter in 1733 with power to receive endowments and to purchase lands, etc. to found schools for poor children. The number of Charter schools grew rapidly from 1734 on, with substantial Parliamentary grants and private endowments. (Bishop Pococke is reported as having visited twenty-six Charter Schools before he founded the Pococke School near Kilkenny in 1763). During the 19th century however the Kildare Place Society (1812-) and the National Board reduced the importance of the Society. It moved away from the field of elementary to that of post-primary education. In 1894 the society was reconstituted under the Educational Endowments (Ireland) Act of 1885.
