Scope & Content: Swaine, John Francis, 1880-1954 Strong, Leonard Alfred George, 1896-1958 ↴
The John Francis Swaine Papers is a collection of correspondence and other material relating to Swaine’s career as a writer. The collection includes correspondence between Swaine and L.A.G. Strong mostly concerning literary topics and sometimes payment of royalties. An arrangement between Swaine and Strong meant that five full-length novels and several hundred short stories, which were written by Swaine, were published under the name of Strong, who paid him a percentage of the royalties. The stories were mainly based on an Irish sage called ‘Mr Mangan’ (a fictional version of Swaine himself) and appeared in the London Evening News, Blackwood’s Magazine and the Strand Magazine, as well as in book form. Also included in the collection are manuscripts of short stories, including the originals of many of Swaine’s stories, and related newspaper cuttings.
