Buncrana Urban District Council was established under the 1898 Local Government (Ireland) Act, 1898. Originally Buncrana Town Commissioners it achieved Urban District status in 1914. Its remit included local housing, the development of water and sewerage facilities, road building and road repair in its area, rates and the electoral register. The Urban District Councils and Town Commissioners became Town Councils in 2002.

The Archives of Buncrana Urban District Council were held by Buncrana Urban District Council (now Town Council) until Donegal County Archives acquired them in 2004.

The collection of Buncrana Urban District Council is extensive and is a detailed record of the day to day activities of the Council from its inception in 1914 and its role as a Town Commissioners prior to that. Included in this collection are the minutes and agendas of the Town Commissioners’ Public Health Committee from 1905 to 1913 (UDC/2/1/1 – UDC/2/1/2) and the minutes and agendas of the Urban District Council from its founding in 1914 to 1993 (UDC/2/1/2 – UDC/2/1/27). Also included in this substantial collection are correspondence files on housing, water and sewerage, roads building and repair, general administration, legal matters such as acquisition and disposal of land, acquisition of Urban District Status, administration of local elections. Included are Planning application registers and files from 1947 to 1973. Included are manager’s orders from 1947 to 1995.
