Barrister, Recorder of Cork c.1841 - 1846/1847. The Recorder was a lead magistrate or judge having criminal and civil jurisdiction in the Cork area. Courts included the Court of Record and Quarter Sessions of the Peace. (The Recorder was originally a post appointed by the mayor and aldermen to 'record' the proceedings of their courts and the customs within the city's jurisdiction). Lived at 13 Charlotte Quay, Cork. Post previously held by William Waggett. Succeeded by Thomas Forsayeth. Married to Jane Hallaran, daughter of William Saunders Hallaran, MD, of Cork. Relative of John Hallaran Bennett, owner of JH Bennett and Co. Maltings, Ballinacurra, County Cork. Father of Prof. Edward Hallaran Bennett, noted surgeon (b1837). His father, James Bennett, was a physician in Cork.

MS. note book of Robert Bennett, Recorder of Cork, 9 Charlotte Quay. Contains notes relating to court cases tried by Bennett at the Assizes between 25 March 1841 – 15 December 1842 and civil bill cases between 19 Mar 1842 – 7 Feb 1843. Notes are organised by date of hearing and title of case. The notes contain details of hearings, plantiffs and defendants, nature of charges, witness testimonies, legal arguments, fines, financial costs, receipt of case bills, affidavitts and other documents, verdicts and judgements handed down. Cases concern a variety of issues, mainly property and financial disputes, non-payment of debts, claims for damages, administration of wills, rent disputes.
