    The collection largely contains the business and political correspondence of Robert Briscoe.

    Business papers relate to Briscoe’s interest in importation and exportation, particularly food but including other items such as watches, fur and parking meters. The papers also illustrate his interest in overseas trade and developing Irish industry, such as sugar and cigarette manufacture.

    Political papers concern Briscoe’s career as a Fianna Fáil T.D. and includes election, cumainn and Ard Fheis material. Documents also relate to his tenure as Dublin Lord Mayor, including invitations to attend social events and material in relation to his mayoral tour of America. In fact, the collection houses a substantial amount of correspondence and news cuttings from American individuals and businesses.

    The collection contains some constituency correspondence in relation to housing and employment as well as correspondence from various charitable, educational, health and religious organisations.

    Personal material includes Briscoe’s Fianna Fáil membership card, appointments diary and passports belonging to him and his wife, Lillie.

    The collection houses papers relating to Jewish affairs, including Jewish immigration, Jews in Palestine, Zion schools, kosher meat, Jews in Poland, the housing of Jewish children in Ireland and social events concerning Jewish groups and societies, such as the Talmudico-Philosophical Society.

    Notable correspondents featured in the collection include Éamon de Valera, Seán T. O’Ceallaigh, Peadar O’Donnell, Dan Breen, Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh, Margaret Pearse, Theodore Roosevelt and Richard Nixon.
